which aside from performing, doesn't happen that often.
we went out to this partially fancy restaurant, where they have live bands on the wekends. they even add 5 bucks to your bill for an entertainment fee.
anyhow, twas my wifes b-day this past wednesay so her parents, myself, and some of her friends from work went to this place to see her aunts husbands band play.
my wife...
her aunt patricia...
her husband nick.
ok, so nick is in this band. and in this band is a lead singer, and lead guitarist. this lead guy is from the original line up of "Blue Oyster Cult" a band from the late 70's with quite a few hits...
godzilla
don't fear the reaper
burning for you
are the top three...
it was quite packed there, and the food was great. Fresko's Grill btw in Avon
anyhow i noticed a couple things that kinda pissed me off....although i had a very good time.

1. here's a very talanted band of 5 guys, with at least one "proffesional" grammy winning, gold record having musician...and they're playing covers! played great, but covers. not because they can't write they're own stuff....but nobody wants to hear they're own stuff. the crowd wants songs they've heard from other people, played by other people, the same way for 30 plus years. wierd.
they could of had a dj up there...playing those same songs. for a 1 dollar entertainment fee on my bill.

2. 5 guys in the band. all in their 50's or so, each had at least wife, kids, cousin, brother all there enjoying the show. the show where they see the same songs, that they have heard for 30 plus years, from OTHER artists. but yet, still there rocking out. having a grand packed house good time.

i'm thinking, we...all of us who go up on stage, showing our asses and hearts, spilling our guts over our own hand crafted, personal ink to paper words and beats. written by us, original.
to barely a crowd, most of the the time, no wife, brother, cousins...
AND not getting paid.
no "original entertainment fee" added to the bar tab.

I think Deto's point is not that he would like to be getting paid to perform at a fancy restaurant rather that while he was obviously surrounded by some talented artists he would like to hear some inovation. The obvious reason I think for this is as Alex pointed out the majority of people don't want to hear it.

To follow your argument about the dj they could have also simply put on the radio for no charge.

We can bitch about this or that and over who is and isn't getting paid and for what reasons but int the end we're still just bitching.

Sometimes its difficult for me to see music from others perspective... I think a lot of people don't like to have to digest new music when they go out. They need it to be ready stamped hit, maybe so they don't have to REALLY listen and decide for themselves. Maybe thats how it works

We do hip-hop. This statement may not make sense right away, but it will later.
