what it do be kids.
on a rare "phenetiks thursday"
roc and pro are busy little phenetiki writing to "sentence structure" so we can wrap that jam up.
in my spare time, i decided to start another re-occuring blog giving you some little known, pointlessly useful knowledge on the entire history of us and then some.
so, if you ready....here we go.
1992 bass funk
waaaaaaaaayyyyy back when...
when myself, deto-22 was known as "j-funk" (insert your laughter here)
myself and a few friends from highschool decided that we could rap.
i myself would write...but not really record anything. i had the d.j. bug at that point, and was perfecting my production craft with pause mixing.
4 tape decks, a turntable, and my step fathers collection of classic rock, and jazz records.
(phenetiks fact: the first record i ever scratched was "freedom" by jimi hendrix
at this point in time, just me and my boy ronny would try and find ways to re-wire speaker systems, and aquire a large collection of mixers and tape decks.
we would listen to digital underground, nwa, and cypress hill repeatedly. and try writting...
ronny admittingly was not that good...
and i was not to confident in my writing skills either. but, i had a dream.
i remember telling my friend dennis (ronny's cousin) that i want to start a hip-hop group, and he said
"yeah ok...where are you instruments?"
1992-1993 6 like this to 5th dimension
at this point in time, the musical roster consisted of:
j-funk
ork
mayo
mc dooty (i think that's what we called him)
and our friend scott d
somehow...there was a 6th person...i have no idea who though.
the 6th person quit before we started probably...so we became 5th dimension.
that is until our boy told us that his parents had an old soul/rb record by a group of the same name.
oh well.
attempting a sound in the vien of a de la soulish, pharcydish kinda vibe...
we had a "studio" set up at a classic spot. "upstairs at moms"
a mic hung from the ceiling, recording live to cassette tape. if verse four is a fuck up...then we start over. real fun, and productive like.
beats would come way via cakewalk v.1
cheap 90's midi synth sounds and drums.
we were great.
never really finished a song, but the fact that we were trying was enough to make us hip-hop gods. LOL!
scott d retired from rhyming, and mc dooty was on some hollywood shit, spittin' rewrites over classic hip-hop joints like "ice ice baby"
so very quickly, we became the three of us.
me...now dj scramble
ork
mayo (who also went through like 37 name changes...but this is the only one that stuck to memory)
next time: "the birth of the name"
