For those of you that don't know. . .
On saturday evening, I took part in the prestigious
Acoustic Cafe's annual Mardi Gras celebration for the benefit of New Orleans. This year was huge as three venues took part (Lady Luck and Black Rock Tavern also) and there were four stages (the cafe rocks two one larger and one singer/songwriter stage). There was a wide range of genres represented as well (blues, latin, folk, etc.) with myself and DJ Halo being the only hip-hop act on the bill. All three venues had excellent turn-outs (one of which had to turn folks away after 11:30) and the room was pretty full when I went on. To my surprise, we were booked for the main stage at Acoustic.
Our set began just after the bluesy vocal/guitar stylings of one Andrew Hoover, a cat that has been making a lot of noise in recent times in this area, finished his set on the smaller stage right at 10 pm. Halo was set up right on the "dance floor" with myself given a small runway of space on the stage amongst the crowded loads of equipment. I like limitations so it was dope. lol
I rocked barefoot and gained a massive (and deep) cut on my right big toe during the third verse of "Looseleaf". It was bleeding through out the entire set and to the best of my knowledge no one noticed. Otherwise, I chose to do a high energy set and was rocking on the dancefloor for most of it. Here was the setlist which ran exactly one half hour to the second lol:
1. Looseleaf
2. Rebel Music
3. Song For the Malnourished
4. Sleep Deprivation and the Artist
5. Stroll (accapella)
6. Words and Numbers
7. Virginia Slim
8. Revolution Will Not Be. . .
9. Six Verses (acapella)
Fun fun fun. Halo did an excellent job (no matter what Mo Niklz says about him lol). I got an excellent response, loads of compliments from the audience and fellow musicians, and a strange criticism ("You were very very good but your lyrics were very depressing." ??!?!? I actually thought those were some of my more positive songs lol).
My set was immediately followed by the incredible Cosmic Jibaros. Which fulfilled one of my small goals I have had for this local scene for sometime. Actually, the night fulfilled two of my smaller goals that wouldn't seem like much of an accomplishment to others but were very big to me. I stood there (or danced foolishly) while I witnessed one of the most impressive guitar solos Darian Cunning has ever done thinking about this. I felt truly blessed to be a part of this scene and held that thought as I shook the hand of Rich Franzino, the former owner and founder of Acoustic Cafe. I have evolved so much in that room.
On to the next shows. . . wednesday, thursday, friday, and saturday's West Hill High School Hip-hop Conference!! Can't wait!
peace and blessings folks
