The other day Billy Ocean came on in a store and I started thinking about the records my parents used to rock when I was growing up. . . i'm kind of curious to know the kind of shit everybody's moms and pops played in their houses growing up. . . thought it would be fun to see if there is any noticable influence lol. . .

my pops: Prince, The Time, Cameo, Billy Ocean, Herbie Hancock, Whodini, War, Cover Girls, etc.

my moms: Whitney Houston, Prince, Mary Jane Girls, Chaka Khan, Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam, Expose, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, etc.

my brother and sister were a major part of my musical upbringing too but lets stick to the parentals for the sake of this discussion. . .

let me know people

I remember moms out the window of the second floor jamming out to Stevie B. "Let me be the one", lol
Pops was always into blues, rock, and classical music. He was the only one on my Dominican side to listen to something other than Spanish music. I spent most of my time outside though, and Hip Hop ruled everything around me! BK was the place to be in the 80's!

My parents weren't really down with music per se...I did most of the listening to their record collection (which I still have). Average Hippie shit; Beatles, Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Woodstock, Joan Baez. My moms would get shitfaced and rock The Kingston Trio sometimes, Pops liked The Dead alot...Oh actually they listened to this comedy troop called The Firesign theater all the time. That's where the "Out of the fog, into the smog" sample came from on the Frustrated N*gga...It's called "Nick Danger; Third Eye"

Wait a minute...what were we talking about again?

mom - SALSA, Merengue of all kinds. Cilia Cruz was her favorite. so Spanish music ALL the time. the one exception would be Christmas. The only thing allowed in that tape deck was and still is the Jackson 5 christmass. Till this day....lol.

but during a gathering she would always also rock whatever her kids were listening to at the time aswell. We would always have big parties and it was important to her that my brother edwin got his freestyle music in, and my brother fredo got his Run DMC and EPMD. and other family members contributed.....a little.

Dad - was all spanish too but he got into the traditional Mexican stuff along with salsa, bachata and merengue. I dont remember much mexican tunes in my moms house.

I cant dance a lick but I used to love getting drunk and pretending I did. WEEEEEPAAA!!!!

well i'm gonna have to go with my mom and my grandma cause to be honest i don't even know if my father likes music to this day.

my mom (no lie with this shit guys) De la Soul, Lisa Lisa and the cult jam, Prince, George Lamond, TKA, Marc Anthony, Luis miguel, Queen, Frank Sinatra, Pretty much anything played by Raul Soto (yeah she followed freestyle like WHOA) La India, Celia Cruz, Run DMC, random house music i can't even begin to know names of, random Christmas music ( mom is something of obsessed about Bing Crosby. I kid you not) pretty much anything that was playing in the clubs at the time being my mom was a bartender for most of my childhood. i think it's one of the reasons i'm so friggin spaztic with my musical choices.

Mi abuelita got me into all the spanish music, Juan luis guerra, tito puente, Orquesto Alto Maiz, Ruben Blades (well really most of the fania fam) and so many random salsa bands and friends who'd get together to drink and jam at the house it's ridiculous. I was like 12 years old and i would hit up this spot in Bridgeport with my grandma called The Old Timers Club on saturday nights just to dance salsa. . .

I just listened to it all and took it in. Totally didn't take advantage of music growing up. It's sad. ::sigh:: this sort of makes me miss my childhood a bit.

WOW. Mom: Slasa, salsa and more salsa. Jerry Rivera, Hector Lavoe, Tito Rojas, Paquito Guzman, Frankie Ruiz, Ruben Blades (my personal favorite), Willie Colon (also with Ruben BLades; great albums), let's see... merengue. Fernandito Villalona, La Gran Manzana, Josie Esteban y la patrulla quince, Juan Luis Guerra (merengue genius by the way). (Sigh) Man, so many memories...

Hey Gelly-

Listen for some Fania All Stars samples coming soon from the AFA and the Nauts in particular!

As for influences of the parents... Nem's list is gonna be waaaay cooler but for me, my pops was into the Eagles, James Taylor, Kenny Rogers, Oak Ridge Boys.

Mom liked disco- Donna Summer, Bee Gees, etc.

Completely lame, I know, but it is what it is, and I figured I should be honest.

Great interview. I'm always awed by the artistry of engineering. Like Hawl, I'm just a rapper, but the process of mixing and the ear that the engineer brings to a project to make the vocals pop and the vocals and the beat mesh has always intrigued m…
